<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a conventional safety device performs detection when foreign matter such as a person's hand and the like is pinched between a windowpane and a sash caused by an increase in load on a winding mechanism, so that the pinched object cannot avoid a certain degree of damage such as injury, pain or the like. <P>SOLUTION: A light-emitting element and a light-receiving element are preprovided on the downside of the windowpane. Light is emitted inward from the light-emitting element, and repeatedly and internally reflected in the range of plate thickness, so as to be emitted outward from an upside. Thus, when the foreign matter exists between the windowpane and the sash, an output is produced from the light-receiving element by reflected light from the foreign matter, and the winding mechanism is stopped by the output.
