The air bag (1) has a fabric layer (3) interconnected in its boundary region with boundary region of another fabric layer. The fabric layers include a protection chamber filled with gas. A ventilation device comprises a ventilation opening (6), which cooperates with a flexible element i.e. retaining strap (7). An area (5) of the ventilation opening is closed by a cover element i.e. region (3') of the fabric layer, if gas pressure in the protection chamber is small. The cover element is adjusted if the gas pressure increases, such that the area of the ventilation opening is partially opened.
