The laser (1) has a laser medium i.e. laser disk (5) such as ytterbium-yttrium aluminum garnet (Yb:YAG) laser disk, and an overheating monitoring device (7) for monitoring overheating of the laser medium. The overheating monitoring device comprises a detector (11) e.g. charge coupled device (CCD) camera and photodetector, for detecting inversion density of the laser medium. The detector detects fluorescence light (12) and parasitic laser light radiated from the laser medium. A projection lens is arranged between the laser medium and the detector to project the laser medium on the detector. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring overheating of a laser medium i.e. laser disk, of a laser i.e. disk laser.
