NOBLE METAL-CONTAINING CATALYST, METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING alpha,beta-UNSATURATED CARBOXYLIC ACID

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for manufacturing α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids from olefins or α,β-unsaturated aldehydes with high productivity, a method of manufacturing the catalyst and a method of manufacturing α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids by using the catalyst.

SOLUTION: The manufacturing method comprises oxidizing an olefin or an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde with molecular oxygen in a liquid phase in the presence of a noble metal-containing catalyst in which a noble metal is supported in spherical zirconia, in order to manufacture an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid. The noble metal-containing catalyst can be manufactured suitably by a method including a process of forming spherical zirconia by spray drying and a process of causing a noble metal to be supported in the zirconia.
