<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigment having a hue of a color from yellow, orange, brown to red, excellent color developing property, excellent fastness in various properties such as light resistance, ozone gas resistance and moisture resistance for inkjet recording or writing utensils, and excellent solubility with water, and a pigment also having good storage stability, and to provide an ink composition containing the pigment. <P>SOLUTION: A water-soluble azo compound expressed by formula (1) or a salt of the compound is disclosed.
