<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase-contrast microscope in which phase contrast and halo are varied by a simple operation, and a variety of specimens are observed at a most suitable phase contrast. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The phase-contrast microscope comprises an open plate 3 located at the pupil position of an illumination optical system and a phase plate 6 located at pupil position of an imaging optical system, wherein the open plate 3 has an opening which is discontinuously rotationally symmetric with respect to an optical axis, the phase plate 6 has a λ/4 phase film 8 having a zona orbicularis having widths which are discontinuously rotationally symmetric with respect to the optical axis, and the phase contrast effect is varied by turning the opening with respect to the optical axis.
