<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the sheet-through reading quality, to improve the reading productivity and to accomplish them, using a simple configuration and functionality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reader includes: a first control means 212 wherein, before moving a first document on a document tray to a sheet-through reading window position, shading data are produced by lighting a reference white plate 102 with a light source 107 and stored in a first storage means and next; shading correction is performed, on the basis of the shading data, upon image data of each of documents to be moved to the reading window position, on the document tray by moving the light source to the window position; and second control means 114, 212 wherein a change in the image data obtained by reading another reading target 118, different from the reference white plate, reflecting the light of the light source at the window position is monitored; and when there is a prescribed change, shading data are produced by driving the light source to the reference white plate position and stored in the first storage means.
