PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that achieves a cost reduction by exerting control to selectively extract output from a current transformer that detects the total current of the image forming apparatus and the fixing current of a fixing unit, thereby sharing a current calculating section. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: the current calculating section 514 which, based upon the outputs from a first current detecting means 512 for detecting the total current values of the image forming apparatus 401 and a second current detecting means 601 for detecting the fixing current value of the fixing unit 431, calculates the average values or effective values of the respective outputs; an input selecting means for selecting output from the first or second current detecting means and then inputting it to the current calculating section; and a control section 201 which controls the image forming apparatus based upon the output from the current calculating section. When the total current value of the image forming apparatus is detected, the control section exerts control such that the output from the first current detecting means is input to the current calculating section. When the fixing current value of the fixing unit is detected, the control section exerts control such that the output from the second current detecting means is input to the current calculating section.
