PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method whereby highly pure 2-alkyl-2-cycloalken-1-one can be obtained in a high yield. SOLUTION: The production method of the 2-alkyl-2-cycloalken-1-one of formula (2) (wherein n is an integer of 1 or 2; and R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each a hydrogen atom or a 1-8C alkyl group, or R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>may, together with a carbon atom adjacent to R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>, form a cyclopentane ring or a cyclohexane ring) comprises: step (A) of carrying out dehydration and isomerization of a raw material, i.e. 2-(1-hydroxyalkyl)-cycloalkan-1-one of formula (1), in the presence of an acid and a platinum group metal catalyst in an atmosphere of 5-45 vol.% hydrogen gas; and step (B) of subsequently carrying out dehydration and isomerization of the raw material in an atmosphere wherein the hydrogen concentration is ≥1 vol.% but lower than that in step (A) by ≥2 vol.%.
