PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of metal carbonitride in a particulate state with uniform composition and high crystallinity.

SOLUTION: The production method of metal carbonitride is characterized in that a metal carbonitride raw material is subjected to a hydrothermal reaction in the presence of water in a supercritical or sub-critical state. The metal carbonitride raw material contains at least one kind of metal element selected from the group 4 elements and the group 5 elements in IUPAC periodical table.
