PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium having high corrosion resistance, while realizing high recording density. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium at least includes non-magnetic substrate, soft magnetic underlayer (SUL), underlayer, intermediate layer, magnetic recording layer, protection layer, and lubricating layer in the above order. The SUL is constituted of an SUL (A), disposed nearest the magnetic layer, two or more layers of SULs (B) excluding the SUL (A), and one or a plurality of non-magnetic metal spacer layers between adjacent two layers of SULs (B). Each SUL (B) is AFC. The SUL (A) is formed of (a) a material selected from among Co, Fe and Ni, (b) a material selected from among Cr, V and Ti, and (c) a material selected from W, Zr, Ta and Nb.
