The sorter has a coin identifying unit for identifying type of coins and transmitting data to a controller. Coin channels (10) with inlet openings (12) are upwardly arranged adjacent to each other. A hopper (14) is mounted in a movable manner for movement over the inlet openings of the coin channels. A drive unit is connected with the controller. The drive unit moves the hopper in a position of a nozzle (16) of the hopper directly above the coin channels selected by the controller for transferring coins moved by gravitational force, where the position of the nozzle corresponds to the data.
