<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that conventionally, a coating liquid having lyotropic crystallinity is flow-casted and oriented to produce optically anisotropic films such as a polarizing film and a retardation film, while when the coating liquid is made to flow while applying shearing stress thereon, the major axis of a supermolecular assembly is oriented to a flowing direction but it is difficult to control the orientation when the shear rate is low, the orientation is insufficient and when the shear rate is high, the orientation is disordered. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The polarizing film with the oriented lyotropic liquid crystal compound achieves high degrees of orientation and polarization under the following conditions: (a) a coating liquid for producing the polarizing film has 20-50 mN/m surface tension at 25°C; (b) shearing stress having a shear rate of 5×10<SP>4</SP>sec<SP>-1</SP>to 1×10<SP>6</SP>sec<SP>-1</SP>is applied; and (c) flow-casting is performed on a substrate.
