A second controlling IC 23 generates a driving pulse for driving a second switching circuit 22 and inputs the pulse to the second switching circuit 22 based on the synchronizing pulse generated by the synchronizing pulse forming circuit 30. The backlight device also includes a synchronization delay circuit for delaying the synchronization of a second CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) 200 immediately after starting, and a synchronization latch circuit for regulating the delay operation of the synchronization delay circuit during PWM dimming.
