<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerator capable of cooling its inside with high efficiency while saving energy by controlling quick freezing automatically depending on the temperature detected by an infrared sensor installed in the refrigerator. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This refrigerator is provided with a storage chamber provided with the infrared sensor 128 for detecting surface temperature of food 121 in its inside and a cooling means for cooling the inside of the refrigerator. This refrigerator controls quick freezing automatically by starting the control of quick freezing at the upper limit temperature set based on the temperature detected by the infrared sensor 128 and ending the control at the lower limit temperature set based on it. Consequently, since this refrigerator performs cooling operation by only required extent as required, cooling operation with high efficiency while saving energy without using energy in vain becomes possible.
