<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elemental smell determining method for an olfactory sense display capable of determining about dozens of general-purpose elemental smells. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The elemental smell determining method is used in the olfactory sense display for forming a target smell by compounding a plurality of the elemental smells and includes a mass analyzing data acquiring step S1 for acquiring the mass analyzing data of a plurality of the candidate elemental smells analyzed by a mass analyzer, a base vector extracting step S2 for extracting a plurality of base vectors from the acquired mass analyzing data of the candidate elemental smells by using the NMF method, and an elemental smell determining step S3 for determining the combination of a single smell capable of expressing the extracted base vectors as the elemental smells.
