PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for removing impurities from a heavy fuel, particularly, a technique of lowering a level of metal or non-metal impurities in the heavy oil. SOLUTION: An adsorption column 100 for removing impurities from the heavy fuel is provided. The adsorption column is a stationary column equipped with two or more baffles 114 and 116 arranged in the column, and is configured to have a plurality of adsorption material particles 106 therein. The adsorption material particles each have an average specific surface area of about 500 m<SP>2</SP>/g to about 1,200 m<SP>2</SP>/g, and an average fine pore volume of about 0.8 cc/g or more, an average diameter of about 5μm to about 100μm, and a particle size distribution wherein at least about 50% of the particles have a diameter greater than about 18μm.
