<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing metal for welding that can be easily bent in three-dimensional directions. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The backing metal for welding is used in butt welding between a column 1 made of steel pipe and a base plate or between the column and a diaphragm 2. In mounting the backing metal body 3 on the inner peripheral face of the column, there is formed, in a part closely adhered to the corner inner peripheral face of the column, a slit group 4 that enables the backing metal body to be bent in three-dimensional directions. Even in welding the column obliquely to a vertical column, one backing metal body can deal with it by bending the backing metal body in a three-dimensional direction from the slit group, dispensing with the use of a plurality of backing metals. As a result, there is no need of machining a plurality of backing metals for the purpose of eliminating a gap in the joining part, which greatly reduces the number of processes required for machining the backing metal body.
