摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which reduces the frequency of switching parameters required for one-path double-sided reading using a one-path double-sided simultaneous reading mechanism and minimizes overhead. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reader has the one-path double-sided simultaneous reading mechanism which reads document images printed on both front and back surfaces of a document by one feed, and a local memory which stores read image data. An image data processing means provided in the image reader simultaneously reads images on the both sides of a document using the one-path double-sided simultaneous reading mechanism, temporarily stores the read images into the local memory, and reads out the stored images to process or output the image. If each side is sequentially processed, the image data processing means reads a plurality of consecutive sheets and stores the acquired image data into the local memory. When reading out image data from the local memory to process or output the image, the image data processing means processes consecutive front surfaces or back surfaces as one frame.
