The method involves starting an initialization process by a capacitive obstacle sensor (6), and executing a moisture measurement by a reference sensor (10) e.g. optical humidity sensor. A capacitance value for the obstacle sensor is selected from a set of stored values. Capacitance measurement is executed by the obstacle sensor, and the measured capacitance value is compared with the selected capacitance value. An actuation signal is released, if the two capacitance values matches with each other, and an error signal is released, if the two capacitance values do not match with each other. An independent claim is also included for a device for examining correct initialization of a capacitive obstacle sensor.
