<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a face detection system that prevents reduction in the performance for detecting the forward-looking failure status caused due to external light variations. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The face detection system includes a first lighting section for irradiating the infrared ray toward the right side of a driver's face, a second lighting section for irradiating the infrared ray toward the left side of a driver's face, an photographing section for photographing each of the driver's faces to which the infrared rays are irradiated from the first lighting section and the second lighting section, and a control section that acquires the right-side and left-side images of the face from the photographing section and the difference image between the acquired right-side and left-side images to determine the forward-looking failure status of a driver.
