<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely determine that an insertion part reaches a small diameter hole from a large diameter hole and to easily and accurately acquire detailed entire periphery image information in a wide range. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electronic endoscope 100 to be inserted into an object to pick up images inside the object includes: a lens holder 19 which is provided with a cylindrical part 15; a lens 17 which is arranged so that an optical axis is aligned with the center axis of the cylindrical part 15, on one end side of the cylindrical part 15; an imaging element 23 which receives light fetched from the lens 17 and converts it to electric signals; a translucent cover 13 which covers one end side of the cylindrical part 15, and whose part facing the outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical part 15 at least is translucent; a cylindrical body part 11; a driving means 21 which is arranged inside the body part 11 and moves the lens holder 19 back and forth in the center axis direction; and a contact detection means 103 which is arranged on a part of the outer surface of the translucent cover 13 or the body part 11.
