<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system which is low in loss, favorable in balance in terms of a light quantity of each color light, and compact in size. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The illumination optical system 100 includes: a first LED (Light Emitting Diode) light source 21G that emits first color light, a second LED light source 21B that emits second color light; a third LED light source 21R that emits third color light; first and second photosynthetic parts 23a, 23b for synthesizing the first color light, the second color light and the third color light so that they may align on the same optical axis. The first and second photosynthetic parts 23a, 23b have the first dichroic mirror 23a which transmits the first color light and reflects the second color light to thereby synthesize the first color light and the second color light, and the second dichroic mirror 23b which transmits the first color light and the second color light that have been synthesized by the first dichroic mirror 23a, and reflects the third color light to thereby synthesize the first color light, the second color light and the third color light. An angle formed of the normal line of the first dichroic mirror 23a and the normal line of the second dichroic mirror 23b is equal to or larger than 60° and smaller than 90°.
