PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact workpiece vice used for fixing a work to the table of a machine tool, capable of holding/releasing the workpiece manually or hydraulically, and capable of setting a minimum advance/retreat stroke required for a moving ferrule when operated hydraulically. SOLUTION: A sliding base 19 to which the moving ferrule 15 is attached and a moving base 18 locked to a base 3 at predetermined multiple positions are connected to each other through a screw rod 23 and a screwing forward/backward member 50. The screwing forward/backward member 50 is moved forward/backward when the screw rod 23 is rotated. The sliding base 19 is allowed to move forward/backward relative to the screwing forward/backward member 50. When the sliding base is moved forward, the screwing forward/backward member is pushed by a flange 47 formed on the outer periphery of the member or the inner periphery of the sliding base 19. In the forward direction, the sliding base is pushed by a flange provided at the outer periphery of the screwing forward/backward member 50 or the inner periphery of the sliding base 19, and in the backward direction, the sliding base is biased toward the flange 47 by a compression spring 56 or the hydraulic pressure in a return side fluid chamber 65.
