The method involves providing compressed air at a cathode (12) of a fuel cell stack of a fuel cell system (10). A connection line (46) from the cathode to an anode (14) is opened during non-supply of a fuel i.e. hydrogen, to the anode so that the compressed air arrives at the anode. A pump (36) is operated, where the pump is provided at an output to the anode. The operation of the fuel cell system is terminated, and a scanning time interval is defined due to a criterion. A temperature measurement is obtained after the scanning time interval is elapsed. An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell system with a fuel cell stack containing a fuel cell.
