<p>The system, suitable for computer storage of diverse forms of printed text, does not require large memory capacity and is simple and rapid to use. Its advantage lies in its ability to recognise and immediately store characters from the coded optical input by comparison with a dictionary of stored standard character forms. A video camera, whose image scan is swept horizontally and vertically by automatic electronic control, produces a binary digital output which indicates the presence or absence of a dark (non-reflecting) area for each of several encoded co-ordinate character zones (X0 X1....,Y1, Y2, Y3). An initial searching sweep allows the camera control logic to define page width and line separation. The horizontal scan is at a reduced speed and has 20 excursions per text line.</p> |
