<p>The process is used in the mfr. of sheet metal bowls or similar of a convex revolutionary outline. It entails the deformation of a part-formed metal piece (1) onto a lathe-mounted mandrel (6, 7). The longitudinal profile of the mandrel is identical to that required of the bowl, its vol. being considerably less than that of the bowl to facilitate extraction. A fixed axle (10) and a rotatable spindle (2) locate the mandrel and the piece respectively, the axle and the spindle being offset radially. The piece is mounted to be free to rotate concentrically on the axle (10), and the axle is fixed to the movable lathe poppet. Finally, deformation is effected by rotating the piece and applying external thrust by e.g. a ball (19).</p> |
