<p>A gland packing which is improved so as to have a satisfactory sealing property despite a whitish appearance is provided by performing further improvements of compensating disadvantages of basalt fibers to combine features of relatively whitish basalt fibers with the feature of the excellent sealing property due to expanded graphite. In the gland packing, a covered yarn 1 configured by covering basalt fibers 11 with organic fibers 12 is braided around an inner core member 3 made of expanded graphite.</p>
