The invention relates to a monitoring device for monitoring vehicle systems, at least some systems having self-monitoring routines for self-monitoring and some systems having external monitoring routines for the external monitoring of other systems, said external routines not being provided for the functions of their own systems or for self-monitoring. According to the invention, if a malfunction or error is detected in at least one function assigned to a first system (ECPB) by external monitoring routines of a third system, a second system (EBS) is activated by said third system that monitors the first system (ECPB) containing the function with the error or malfunction, in order to identify and/or limit the error or malfunction in the at least one function of the first system (ECPB) by means of actuators and/or sensors assigned to the second system (EBS) and/or in order to activiate an emergency programme of the second system (EBS) as a replacement for the defective function of the first system (ECPB).
