CATALYTIC REACTOR

A catalytic reactor is provided which can be stably used even under conditions which result in a decrease in apparent catalyst volume relative to the reaction vessel.  Also provided is a method of using the reactor. The catalytic reactor comprises: a reaction vessel packed with a catalyst; and an introduction part which introduces a feed-material fluid into the reaction vessel.  The reaction vessel is packed with a catalyst having supported ruthenium.  A mixture gas is supplied as the feed-material fluid to the reaction vessel to produce, in the presence of the ruthenium catalyst, synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide.  The introduction part has been connected to the reaction vessel from a horizontal direction or from a direction inclining upward from the horizontal.  The reaction vessel has been packed with the catalyst to a height which is above the position where the feed-material fluid is blown from the introduction part into the reaction vessel.
