A catalyst composition having a low surface area of less than 100 m2/g and a high mean pore diameter of greater than 200 A, wherein the catalyst composition comprises a cobalt component, a molybdenum component, a phosphorus component and an alumina support which support is predominantly in the form of theta-alumina and delta-alumina. The catalyst composition is highly active toward the hydrodesulfurization of an olef in-containing feedstock having a sulfur concentration while being selective toward the hydrogenation of the olefins contained in the feedstock and is used in a novel process for the selective desulfurization of an olef in-containing feedstock.
