A photovoltaic power generating system and method, the system comprising a receiver comprising an array of photovoltaic devices, at least one light director to direct sunlight onto the receiver, a control system for controlling the angular orientation of each light director as the sun moves so that the sunlight is reflected towards the receiver, and a condition monitor with an energy detector (for example a non-contact device such as a camera or infrared sensor) for obtaining signals indicative of energy distribution, intensity or average over at least part of the array to monitor at least one condition. A solar thermal power generating system and method and a hybrid photovoltaic/solar-thermal power generating system and method are also provided.
