An antenna array or a method of its calibration comprises generating at least one calibration signal 45 and mixing it, using mixers 50-1, 50-2 - 50-K, with a payload signal 25 to be transmitted via the plural paths 30-1, 30-2 - 30-K associated with respective antenna array elements. The transmission signals of the antenna array element paths are summed in a device 60 and an estimated value of an interference signal is derived in an estimator 90 and is subtracted from the summed signal 65 by a device 95. The difference signal 97 produced is then compared with the at least one calibration signal 45. The comparison may provide correlation results which provide clear phase and amplitude calibration with minimum interference from the payload signal 25. The at least one calibration signal may be provided by at least one generator 40-1, 40-2, 40-K. The interference estimation may be based on a normalised least mean square estimate associated with the transmitted signal. The interference cancellation provided by this system may improve the speed and accuracy of the phase and amplitude calibration process. The calibration system may be implemented using hardware and/or software based signal processing means. |
