A vacuum cleaner is provided to regulate operation of the vacuum cleaner according to overheat of a motor, and to prevent breakage of the motor by measuring rotation of the motor and displaying the rotational state of the motor. A vacuum cleaner includes a body for sucking air and filtrating foreign matters from air, a suction nozzle installed to the body to suck air and foreign matters, a motor(112) embedded in the body to generate rotational power, a rotation state measuring unit(140) formed in the motor to measure rpm of the motor, and a rotation state display unit for displaying rpm of the motor detected by the rotation state measuring unit. The rotation state measuring unit has a reflecting plate(142) fixed in a central shaft(112') of the motor and rotated to selectively reflect light, and a rotation detector(144) spaced from the reflecting plate to project light into the reflecting plate and to output an electric signal according to the quantity of reflected light.
