PURPOSE: A Paecilomyces japonica extract displaying inhibitory effect on cathepsin K is provided. The functional food and pharmaceutical composition containing the Paecilomyces japonica extract and calcium preparations are used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. CONSTITUTION: The functional food and pharmaceutical composition contain a Paecilomyces japonica extract as an effective ingredient. The Paecilomyces japonica extract is prepared by extracting Paecilomyces japonica in a polar solvent such as distilled water, ethanol, methanol or the like and a nonpolar solvent such as ether, hexane or the like, preferably polar solvent, at 90 to 100deg.C., followed by centrifugation and freeze-drying.
