Aqueous polyvinyl ester dispersion comprises: (a) at least one vinyl ester copolymer derived from at least one vinyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid, at least one ethylenically unsaturated and N-alkylol groups and/or derivatives of these groups containing monomer and optionally further comonomers; (b) at least a protective colloid; (c) at least one carboxylic acid and/or its salt, which contains at least one further group comprising hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl, carboxylic acid ester and carboxylic acid amide; and (d) at least one water soluble salt having a divalent metal ion.
