The valve mechanism (1) has a valve (4) for releasing or closing a gas flow, where the valve exhibits a thermal current self retaining mechanism (14). Another valve (5) is arranged in series to the valve (4) for releasing and closing a part of the gas flow. A control device (18) is connected with the thermal current self retaining mechanism and a bistabile drive (19) to alternatively operate the thermal current self retaining mechanism and the bistabile drive on a closing instruction in a closing direction. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a relief valve mechanism.
