The piston (10) has a cast piston crown (11) with a piston base, where a cooling channel (16) runs around the piston crown at height of a circulating ring part (15). A surface (17) of the cooling channel includes circulating grooves (21), which run parallel to each other. Transverse grooves are provided to connect the circulating grooves. Each circulating groove is U-shaped or V-shaped in cross-section. Each transverse groove exhibits the depth that is smaller than the depth of the circulating groove, where the depth of the circulating groove is 0.15 millimeter. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a piston for an internal combustion engine.
