<p>NEW MATERIAL:The alcohol of formula I (R<1> is H or methyl; R<2> is H, methyl or ethyl; R<3> is H, methyl, ethyl or isopropyl; R<2> and R<3> may together form a ring; R<4> is H or group of formula II). EXAMPLE:1,5-Vis(tetrahydrofuryl)pentan-3-ol. USE:Useful as a dilution solvent for the resin for paint or ink, a film-forming assistant for emulsion, a lubricant, an intermediate raw material for industrial chemicals, etc. When the compound is used as a solvent of resin for paint, it acts as a solvent having high dilution ratio and improves the physical properties of coating film and the workability. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared e.g. by condensing furfural with a ketone (e.g. acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, etc.) in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, and carrying out the catalytic reduction of the condensation product in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst such as Raney nickel.</p> |
