PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte battery having high capacity and excellent storage characteristics and cycle characteristics while sufficiently enhancing safety in overcharge.

SOLUTION: A nonaqueous electrolyte used for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery contains a phosphate compound and/or a carboxylate compound having an alkyl group-substituted phenyl group, and the number of carbon atoms of the alkyl group substituting the phenyl group is all 4 or more.
