PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical pencil which enables a lead 10 to be fed to a specified length and rotated by moving a protrusion 12 of a sliding member 9 in a longitudinal direction along a guide groove 8A. SOLUTION: This mechanical pencil incorporates a ball chuck-type lead retaining mechanism which permits forward moving of the lead 10 and prevents receding of the lead 10, inside a barrel 5. In addition, a tip member 8 is fitted to the forward part of the barrel 5 and a guide groove 8A tilting circumferentially is formed by piercing through the tip member 8. Further, the sliding member 9 with a lead holder 11 for keeping the lead 10 by an appropriate retaining force, is incorporated in the tip member 8. Besides, the protrusion 12 is fixed to the sliding member 9 and is allowed to jut out to the outside by introducing the protrusion 12 through the guide groove 8A. The lead 10 inside the sliding member 9 can be properly rotated by manipulating the protrusion 12 to move it forward and backward in the longitudinal direction along the guide groove 8A.
