<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute encoder utilizing an architecture of an incremental encoder. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A wheel 100 includes a circular wheel body 102 and a plurality of grids 104. The grids 104 include a primary grid 104A which is a main grid arranged on a reference line, and secondary grid units 104B, 104C which are a plurality of sub-grids arranged on at least one adjustment line. The number of grids of the sub-grids 104B, 104C is smaller by one than the number of grids of the main grid 104A.
