<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for obtaining a satisfactory transfer image in which occurrence of transferred image defects, such as void, image blur and uneven toner attachment is prevented. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In order to prevent a lubricant 2 from scattering and falling from the surface 1a of an intermediate transfer belt 10, a lubricant press roller 7 is disposed adjacent to an application roller 1 and downstream in the conveying direction A of the intermediate transfer belt 10. The lubricant adhering to the peripheral surface 7c of the press roller 7 is scraped and removed by causing a blade-like cleaning member 9, such as a polyester sheet, to slide against the peripheral face 7c of the roller 7. The pressing of the lubricant 2a by the peripheral face 7c is kept stable for a long time.
