PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an unsaturated polyester giving a cured product having well-balanced rigidity, heat resistance, water resistance and solvent resistance and mechanical properties, particularly toughness, and an unsaturated polyester resin composition and an unsaturated polyester resin cured molded article. SOLUTION: The method for producing the unsaturated polyester is characterized in that, in a first invention, as a first-stage reaction, glycerol (A) is reacted with an aromatic monobasic acid (B-1) or a monobasic acid component (B) comprising the aromatic monobasic acid (B-1) and an aliphatic monobasic acid (B-2) to partly esterify three hydroxy groups of the glycerol, and, as a second-stage reaction, the resultant ester compound is reacted with a dihydric alcohol component (C) and a dibasic acid component (D), and in a second invention, as a first-stage reaction, the glycerol (A) is reacted with the aromatic monobasic acid (B-1) to partly esterify three hydroxy groups of the glycerol, as a second-stage reaction, the resultant ester compound is brought into an ester exchange reaction with a vegetable oil (E), and, as a third-stage reaction, the resultant product of the ester exchange reaction is reacted with the dihydric alcohol component (C) and the dibasic acid component (D).
