A storage section for burst reading (200) and a storage section for continuous reading (210) are set independently for each two-dimensionally arranged pixel (10). The storage section for burst reading (200) comprises capacitors (25001-25104) capable of retaining multiple signals, while the storage section for continuous reading (210) comprises a solitary capacitor (213), and the output signal lines of both storage sections are also set separately. When signals generated through photoelectric conversion at each pixel (10) are output to a pixel output line (14), the signals may be simultaneously written into the capacitors of the storage sections (200, 210), after which the signals may be read separately to an external section at different times. This makes it possible to obtain captured images with very short time intervals within a short time period at arbitrary times without experiencing any trouble in obtaining continuous captured images at a low frame rate. As a result, it is possible to simultaneously capture images at a very high rate with a limited number of frames while also capturing images at a lower rate with no restrictions to the number of frames.
