<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve instability of combustion occurring in an engine, for example, when fuel containing water is used, and reduce damage of the engine due to knocking. Ž<P>SOLUTION: ECU 100 determines if knocking occurs or not (step S41) while detecting information related to a knocking occurrence state supplied by a knocking sensor 219. The ECU 100 sets ignition timing at retardation side (step S42) without based on octane number of fuel so as to make knocking not detected in a cylinder 201, in other words, make knocking not occur in the engine 200 when it is determined that knocking does not occur.
