<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately control ignition timing even if an internal combustion engine is operated outside a data range fundamental to a statistic model with respect to a controller of an internal combustion engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the internal combustion engine is operated outside the data range fundamental to the statistic model, the ignition timing is set based on the relationship between an engine parameter and an engine torque, obtained by extrapolating the statistic model. In this case, an operation condition of the internal combustion engine is obtained, and the relationship between the engine parameter and the engine torque obtained by the extrapolation of the statistic model, is corrected according to the running condition thus obtained.
