<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing image defect on various webs such as a web of rough surface paper, a web subjected to thermal deformation, or webs of different web widths and capable of ensuring a stable transfer band and the longevity of a transfer roller where the transfer roller is used in a high speed machine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus including an image carrier, a toner image forming apparatus for forming a toner image on the image carrier, a transfer means for transferring the toner image on a recording medium, and a conveying means for conveying the recording medium to an area between the image carrier and the transfer means, is characterized in that the transfer means includes: a transfer member in the form of a belt or a roller; a charging means for charging the surface of the transfer member to a polarity opposite to that of the toner image; an electricity removal means for removing electricity from the surface of the transfer member; a cleaning means for cleaning the surface of the transfer member; and an electricity optically removal means disposed between the toner image forming means and the transfer means.
