PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photosynthesis method, an illuminator and a projection type image display device, which facilitate installation of a light source and reduce costs. SOLUTION: In a first pattern, grids existing at rear ends in left and right units 1a and 1b are set as a light source arranging position , and a grid existing at a right end in a rear unit 1c is set as a light source arranging position. In a second pattern, grids existing at front ends in left and right units 2a and 2b are set as a light source arranging position , and grids existing at left and right ends in a rear unit 2c are set as a light source arranging position. The first pattern and the second pattern are alternately arranged in a longitudinal direction, the light sources are arranged at the respective light source arranging positions, and also prism mirrors 5a and 5b are arranged in a photosynthesis area S. The prism mirrors 5a and 5b are arranged at positions where they reflect light from the light sources on right and left surfaces to the same direction as light from the light source on a rear surface and they do not overlap the optical path of the light from the rear surface.
