PURPOSE:To prevent a background part from being colored and to set up the lightness of the background part in case of using a polychromatic color filter to a uniform and small value by forming a black mask layer on a part excluding a display pattern and adding a two-color coloring matter in a black group to liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:At the position of no voltage impression, a light from a backlight 1 is transmitted through a color filter 14 and the 1st polarizing plate 12, but optically polarized by the liquid crystal 8 in a TN type liquid crystal cell 2, so that the light can not be transmitted through the 2nd polarizing plate 13 and becomes dark background. Since the part excluding the display pattern on the inside of a display base 4 is covered with the black mask layer 9 and the black two-color coloring matter 7 is contained in the liquid crystal 8, a color due to light interference in the cell 2 or the color of the color filter 14 is canceled by the mask layer 9 and the two-color coloring matter 7 and a color close to pure black can be obtained. In addition, the background becomes dark such that the border between a red area 14a and a blue area 14b of the color filter 14 can not be distinguished and the brightness of the background part is uniform even if the polychromatic color filter 14 is used.
